Sometimes the process to creating something can seem difficult, but in reality it is simple and straightforward. Building strong and lasting connections with people is one of those “somethings”. Relationships, whether personal or professional, are complicated, but both rely on three basic tenets:

Be Genuine: If you look up the definition of flattery, the first description is something that flatters, the second definition is insincere or excessive praise. Building connections means being genuine as a person and being genuine in your interest in the other. We all fall victim periodically to using or buying into flattery because it fills a need for us in some way, but it is not the foundation of a genuine relationship. Most people will be less interested in time with somebody who is simply trying to dazzle them and more interested in somebody who is interested in them.

If you want to read a great post on being genuine, check out Alena Hall’s post in the Huffington Post – “6 Signs You’re a Truly Genuine Person”.

Be Outrageously Helpful: We all know the rule that we make time for what is important to us – if you make time to help somebody else, you are giving them a big indicator that they are important to you. Offering help is one of the best ways to provide value and build trust. Offering help and failing to deliver is a sure sign that a true intention to help was never really there.

Be Consistent: People like to know what to expect from other people. We all look for consistency when interacting with people. Define for yourself what you stand for and act accordingly. If you deliver excellent customer service, make sure that you are consistent with that goal. Whatever it is that you stand for, you need to be consistent with your actions and your words – it is what people depend on.

If you want to build memorable connections and want to be memorable to the people you connect with – being genuine, being outrageously helpful and being consistent will be the process to get you there.
